Mission
Why now
Japan has three problems and they arrive in order
They look separate — they share one root
11 millionworkers short by 2040
The gap is not in office work but in work done with the body: care 25.2%, driving 24.1%, construction 22.0%. More people will not close it.
¥6.7tndigital deficit, 2024. Tripled in a decade, largest in the OECD
AI investment runs at ¥43tn in the US against just over ¥1tn here across five years. Pricing power sits with the supplier.
12.4 yearsaverage job tenure. The US: 3.9
Two employer changes per career against twelve; 3.1% business closure against 11.1% in the UK. Nobody moves, so capability never compounds.
Vision
AI finishes searching, writing and calculating in an instant. Robots are beginning to take on work on site. Even so, some steps are left to people at the end: talking on the phone, checking a place in person, handing something in at a counter, taking responsibility for saying “this is fine”. The faster AI gets, the more the overall speed is set by these people.
Yet in Japan, those people will be 11 million short by 2040, and the ones already working stay with the same company for 12.4 years on average. So Japan keeps buying its AI from abroad, and ¥6.7tn a year flows out of the country.
Value gathers around whatever is scarcest. AI can be bought; the time of people who work on site cannot be imported. The country that can move its scarce human time to where it is needed will take the value of the age of AI.
The root
The safety net was put inside
the company — not the state
Leaving therefore costs a great deal, and resources never move from low returns to high ones.
It is not that people are unwilling; the system was built this way,
and treating it as a matter of individual willpower changes nothing.
So rather than pushing people to move more, we change what moving means.
Contract work lets someone shift part of their hours without quitting.
For people living abroad it amounts to taking on Japanese work without moving to Japan.
No employment is created, so no licence is needed.
